What it is

Overview

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist and an approved prescription medicine, with indications in type 2 diabetes and in weight management. It has the largest and most rigorous evidence base of anything in this index, including cardiovascular outcome trials.

That evidence concerns the approved pharmaceutical product used as labelled. A separate and contested supply of compounded material has circulated, and regulators have raised concerns about it, including about salt forms that are not the approved active ingredient. The compounding situation has changed repeatedly and any statement about it needs checking for currency before it publishes.

The evidence base

What the research examines

Type 2 diabetes, weight management, and cardiovascular outcomes, across large randomised trials, with continuing study in kidney disease and other indications.

As reported on the show

Reported protocols

Attributed to the person who described them. Amounts, timing and interactions as stated on air.

No protocol reported

Nobody has described a protocol for Semaglutide on the show. When someone does, it will appear here attributed to them.

Reported in the literature

Adverse effects

Documented on the approved labelling, which is authoritative and carries a boxed warning regarding thyroid C-cell tumours observed in rodents. Gastrointestinal effects are the most commonly reported category; pancreatitis, gallbladder disease and delayed gastric emptying are documented.

As supplied

Presentation and storage

An approved pharmaceutical product supplied as a pre-filled pen for injection, refrigerated, and as an oral tablet formulation.
