Selank

Cognitive

A synthetic heptapeptide derived from the immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin, studied for anxiolytic effects without the sedation associated with benzodiazepines.

What it is

Overview

Selank is a synthetic peptide based on tuftsin, developed in Russia and used clinically there for anxiety. Research has examined effects on anxiety and on the balance of neurotransmitter and immune signalling, with interest centring on whether an anxiolytic effect can be achieved without sedation or dependence.

As with the other compounds from this research tradition, the literature is largely Russian-language and has not been substantially replicated by independent groups. It is registered as a medicine in Russia and is not approved elsewhere.

The evidence base

What the research examines

Anxiety, stress response, and effects on BDNF and neurotransmitter signalling, from a literature concentrated in one research tradition.

As reported on the show

Reported protocols

Attributed to the person who described them. Amounts, timing and interactions as stated on air.

No protocol reported

Nobody has described a protocol for Selank on the show. When someone does, it will appear here attributed to them.

Reported in the literature

Adverse effects

The originating literature reports it as well tolerated without the sedation or dependence associated with benzodiazepines. That record has not been independently verified.

As supplied

Presentation and storage

Supplied as a nasal solution in its registered form, and as a lyophilised powder elsewhere.
