What it is

Overview

SNAP-8 is an octapeptide developed as a topical cosmetic ingredient. Its proposed mechanism involves interference with the SNARE protein complex, and it is marketed by analogy to botulinum toxin, which acts on the same machinery by a different and far more potent route.

The analogy carries much more weight in marketing than in evidence. Published independent research is limited, and much of what is cited originates with ingredient manufacturers. Whether a peptide of this size meaningfully penetrates to the neuromuscular junction from topical application is the unresolved question underneath every claim made for it.

The evidence base

What the research examines

Topical cosmetic application for expression lines. Independent research is sparse and skin penetration is the unresolved question.

As reported on the show

Reported protocols

Attributed to the person who described them. Amounts, timing and interactions as stated on air.

No protocol reported

Nobody has described a protocol for SNAP-8 on the show. When someone does, it will appear here attributed to them.

Reported in the literature

Adverse effects

Topical cosmetic use is generally reported as well tolerated, with irritation the usual consideration for any topical formulation.

As supplied

Presentation and storage

Supplied as an ingredient in topical cosmetic formulations, typically in solution. A topical cosmetic ingredient, not an injectable.
